What is Harvest Today?

Harvest Today presents breaking news in the world of philanthropy from over 200 of the finest news sources.  Newsfeeds are updated daily, and organized into their appropriate topic -- we call them channels.

  • Grant announcements

  • Legislative updates

  • Research findings and breakthroughs

  • Innovative approaches

  • Cutting-edge strategies and tactics

Harvest Today is unique in that it brings together the most sophisticated search technology with human intelligence to deliver accurate and engaging content.  Working in partnership with leading experts in their field, Harvest Today selects news from sources that are recognized for their editorial excellence.  This includes newsfeeds, press releases, reports, research, and PDF files.

Who edits the Harvest Today? One of the headlines makes no sense.

The headlines that appear on Harvest Today are selected entirely by computer algorithms, based on how and where the stories appear elsewhere on the web.  One of the key differentiators is that we allow human intelligence to be mapped into the system one-time, up front, and then leverage that intelligence when the algorithms take over. There are no human editors selecting or grouping the headlines and no individual decides which stories get top placement. This occasionally results in some articles appearing to be out of context. If you see odd results, please notify us at ahastings@nptrust.org so we can fine-tune the algorithm to improve the service.

I just clicked on an articles and it asks me to register to access the site.  Why do I have to do this?

A few of our sources require you to register before you can read their content (e.g., The New York Times, The Chronicle of Philanthropy, etc.).  While this can be frustrating, we will not override the editorial policies of any site that we harvest without their expressed written permission.  We try to only select content providers where registration process is a one-time process and is free.  We do not harvest news from sources that require payment to view content.

How far back does Harvest Today go?

It depends on the level of news activity.  In some cases our articles go back a few weeks, while other channels can go back as far as two months.  It's best to keep checking in as our news is updated daily.

How could you not include South Dakota Giving News?  How can I add this as a news source?

We invite you to submit any site -- including your own -- that you think would be of interest to our visitors.  We can't guarantee that we will add all sources that are recommended.  Our staff will review your submission to ensure it meets our editorial standards, and serves the interests of our visitors.  To submit a site, go to our Add A Website and complete and email our online form.

How about a Channel covering Children's Literacy, or Planned Giving? Can these be added?

We welcome any ideas or suggestions for topics to cover -- especially if you know good sources of content.  To submit a potential topic send an email to ahastings@nptrust.org.

Do you allow other websites to syndicate content from Harvest Today?

Yes.  Costs vary depending on whether you want to develop a customized channel, or add a news channel from our existing inventory.  To find out how to add harvest to your website we have included all the information you need on our website.  Click here to find out more.

Do I need to be a Website programmer to syndicate headlines from Harvest Today?

Not at all. We've taken steps to ensure that people with limited knowledge of updating Web sites will be able to syndicate the HarvestToday headlines. We will provide you with the necessary code for the syndication. You just need to let us know if you would prefer JavaScript or an HTML-Include:

  • JavaScript - we give you code that you copy and paste on to your Web site.

  • HTML-Include - We give you a URL that you use to do an HTML-Include. You need to know how to work with an HTML-Include in the programming language of your Web site.

Do you accept advertising?  Do you accept sponsorships?

We do not place ads on Harvest Today.  However, we are seeking foundation and corporate underwriters to help Harvest Today cover start-up and maintenance costs of new channels, and sponsors to help us syndicate and distribute specific "channels."  We also welcome any grant and in-kind support.  If you would like to support Harvest Today and/or sponsor a Channel please contact Andrew W. Hastings, Vice President, of the National Philanthropic Trust.
