AmeriCorps grants dwindle
AmeriCorps, the national
service program created by President Bill Clinton
and praised by President Bush, announced grants
that will pay for 30,000 new members - fewer than
half as many as last year. That has many advocates
wondering how a program that Bush had singled out
for bigger budget requests could have fallen on
such hard times.
Foundations Anxious Over Bill on
Giving A proposal in Congress that would force
the nation's foundations to give more money each
year to charities is roiling the nonprofit world
-- worrying foundations, encouraging some
financially pinched grant recipients and buoying
activists who have long agitated for a boost in
payouts.
Cities Seeking Handouts From
Nonprofits Cash-strapped cities nationwide are going
hat-in-hand to nonprofit organizations for
donations to help pay the bills. From Providence,
R.I., to Palo Alto, CA, cities find themselves
asking for voluntary payments from hospitals,
universities, museums and charities so they don't
have to raise property taxes.
Great Expectations As the Greatest Generation
passes on its wealth, the inheritors will be left
to sort out their uneasy feelings about their
sizeable new fortunes.
New nonprofit aims to help charities
develop sideline businesses Start-up companies can turn
to any of a number of organizations for business
advice, support and even seed money. Now, in
Pittsburgh, nonprofits can get the same kind of
help if they want to start businesses themselves
from the Pittsburgh Social Venture
Accelerator.
"Operation Phoney Philanthropy"
Launched to Fight Charity Fraud
Scam artists, beware.
"Operation Phoney Philanthropy" is underway. A law
enforcement and public education campaign,
Operation Phoney Philanthropy was launched by the
Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Thirty-four
states, the Better Business Bureau's Wise Giving
Alliance, and GuideStar have all been enlisted in
the effort to stop fraudulent fund-raising and
help donors avoid phony charities.
City's nonprofit CEOs top nation in
salary Chicago is the city that shoulders the big
freight, charitywise--and pays nonprofit CEOs the
most to bring in the bucks, according to a new
national study.
